In today’s world, it is unfortunately commonplace for potentially large-scale active shooter incidents to occur. In recent years, there has been a rash of school shootings, resulting in lives lost, and traumatic emotional damage to those impacted. As a result, schools and businesses are implementing “active shooter training” courses and drills. Even though an actual situation may never happen, it is better to be safe (and prepared) than to be sorry.
More than 90% of schools, and more and more businesses each year, have implemented processes and trainings to prepare for active shooter situations. Many school systems simply cannot afford extensive protection methods and products, so they rely on training students to turn off lights, lock doors, hide under desks – all demonstrably ineffective protective practices.
SGN Innovations designed a method of protection in firearm-related incidents. It is a quick, safe, and effective method designed to provide a safety service to our teachers and students in educational institutions across the nation, in response to the recent epidemic of school. The design is an interconnecting ballistic shield intended to be strategically installed within short reach for fast protection, quick access, and easy handling. Students and teachers can protect themselves individually or increase the protective barrier by connecting multiple units to create a barrier wall.
Although the initial intent was to provide this product to our students in schools, it can also be applied to all civilians’ facilities, the armed services, and police forces. In addition to schools, our target markets include (but are not limited to) office buildings, factories, auditoriums, theaters, airports, worship centers, malls, and other places where large groups of people gather. This will provide a sense of protective comfort and therefore will foster a greater level of composure during critical times.

Military Installations
On July 16, 2015, in Chattanooga, Tennessee, a lone shooter traveled first to an Army recruitment center, and then to two military centers (U.S. Naval Operational Support Center and Marine Corps Reserve Center), a few miles away, and five military personnel were gunned down. Had they had this type of protective barrier to employ upon the first shot fired, they very well could be alive today.
Entertainment Venues
In 2012, James Holmes opened fire at a movie theater in Aurora, Colorado. 12 people were killed. Even one life (and potentially multiple or all, could have been spared, had there been a system of ballistic protection installed in the movie theater.
In 2017, a lone shooter entered Mandalay Bay Hotel in Las Vegas, and single-handedly murdered 59 people. If there was a system of ballistic protection designed to protect a group of people that was readily accessible and available, this number could have been greatly reduced.

Problem product is solving
Currently available ballistic protection products are too expensive and/or not flexible enough to meet our needs. They are cumbersome, expensive, and do not offer the level of protection needed by larger groups of people. In addition, with current classroom layouts, students are still left vulnerable with the steps they are taught in their active shooter exercises. Hiding under a desk leaves students vulnerable, says active shooter prevention expert, Chris Grollnek. According to Grollnek, over 90 percent of fatalities in at least 13 active shootings were of individuals trying to hide (Source: ABC News). Likewise, flipped tables are not impenetrable, nor do they protect a large number of individuals.
Often, active school shooters are young enough to have experienced active shooter exercises, so they are aware of the “Run, Hide, Fight” motto repeated throughout a typical training. They are aware that a classroom that is dark may very well be filled with students, hiding out-of-sight. These tactics are no longer a deterrent to the knowledgeable student, determined to take as many lives as possible.
Current ballistic protective products also lack effective coverage, are easily removed by a determined assailant, and are cumbersome to transport. In addition, schools are increasing restrictions on carrying backpacks (usually in an effort to reduce the intrusion of weapons hidden on the person), so carrying personal protection isn’t feasible. In addition, providing one protective device per student is often only possible at a high cost – something that school districts and administrations are not able to afford. Based upon research presented by Active Response Training, an online resource for emergency response, “Active killers have historically stopped their attack as soon as they have been met with EFFECTIVE resistance.”
Current barrier methods are cost-prohibitive, intrusive, cumbersome, take up a large amount of classroom space, or do not protect against a large group of individuals as a whole. The SGN ballistic shield is inexpensive, portable, able to be placed in an easily accessible location, and effective.

Our solution
To provide an improved ballistic shield that can be strategically placed for quick access and easy handling by an individual, and which can be interconnected to speedily deploy and provide protection to a group of individuals. Our product addresses multiple issues: cost, ability to quickly interlock for an increased protective barrier footprint, ease-ofaccess, ease-of-use, speed of assembly, assembly simplicity (for the sake of younger users, and the fast action needed to quickly mobilize the protective barrier).
